Description

Tamanu oil has been confirmed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties and has been shown to aid wound healing.

Characteristics

Tamanu oil is said to alleviate pain, the oil is also used topically to relieve the pain caused by conditions like sciatica, cold sores, and shingles.

Chemistry

Tamanu oil is tested on a reconstructed epidermis to assess the production of interleukin IL-1 alpha after exposure to 0,5% SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate). It also significantly reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1 alpha.

Tamanu oil has been known to cause irritation in individuals and those who have a nut allergy are more prone to negative effects.

History

Used in Polynesia and Southeast Asia on the face, hair, and skin for conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and scars. In Southern India, the oil of the seeds of the plant has been historically used for treating skin diseases. It is also applied topically in cases of rheumatism.
